About Us
Our Purpose & Philosophy
Being the Antidote to Wokeness, Entitlement and Censorship
At 1776 Survival, we believe that kids who face challenges, struggle a little, and then overcome them, are much better equipped to take on real life when they grow up. We call this 'developing self-efficacy', and furthering that development in our students is the core purpose and driving force of everything we do.
We are concerned about what schools, cable news networks, and social media platforms are teaching our kids. We reject the identity politics, victim mentality, entitlement and anger that is promoted through Critical Race Theory, Gender Ideology, and all of their woke offshoots that are polluting our kids' minds and tearing them away from their parents and family values. We also push back on the modern model of childhood that encourages staying indoors, playing video games and spending hours on smartphones and social media.
We offer an alternative vision of childhood through a set of values that we believe align with traditional American families - and in fact, with the founding of our country. Having a deep background in Experiential Education as well as Wilderness Therapy, we design our courses to not only teach fun, challenging, and useful hard skills (like starting a fire with a bow drill, or building a shelter with leaves and branches) but to teach lessons and values through the challenge that mastering these skills represents.
These values are:
1) Courage
2) Self-Reliance
3) Persistence in the face of adversity
4) Craftsmanship
5) Leadership with Compassion
On an individual level, these values reinforce the dignity, self-worth, and sense of belonging that every young person deserves within our society, which we believe counters and immunizes them against the mental illness (anxiety, depression, hopelessness) that plagues young people today. Schools and social media may teach our kids that they shouldn't have to work hard to succeed, but should instead maximize aspects of their identity that make them a victim so that they will 'deserve' more from society. This toxic mentality leaves them with a hollow sense of self, dependent on the handouts of those around them and enslaved to follow the shifting trends of the latest, hottest new avenue of victimhood in order to survive.
We teach them to proactively seek out success, to be contributors rather than detractors from society, and that personal responsibility and hard work is the only way to survive both in the wilderness and in life. On our courses, they live out these truths every time they have to work as a group to navigate with a compass, or build a shelter, or forage for food.
On a cultural level, we believe that these values are vitally important to maintain the health of our society and nation. We believe that they represent the original idea and vision of America, which drew together people of every religion, race and background who shared one goal in common: the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness, with the Constitution and Bill of Rights as their road map and binding agreement with their neighbors. This is where our name, 1776 Survival, originates.
Now, with both our kids and our nation at stake due to the Socialism taught in our schools and reinforced through almost every Government agency, social media platform and legacy media network, we seek to dust off these values and reinvigorate them. We want to rebuild the American immune system that has fought off every type of tyranny for 240 years, from British Monarchy to Nazi Fascism, and from Soviet Communism to modern day Socialism.
We believe that this immune system is being broken down and before it fails, we need a new generation of young people who can take on these challenges with courage and clear vision, and defeat them.
“If an American is to amount to anything he must rely upon himself, and not upon the State; he must take pride in his own work, instead of sitting idle to envy the luck of others. He must face life with resolute courage, win victory if he can, and accept defeat if he must, without seeking to place on his fellow man a responsibility which is not theirs.”

Founder & Lead Instructor
Meet the Founder
Zach was homeschooled K-12, and credits that (as well as his parents) with his independent mindset. After Highschool Zach backpacked Nicaragua and Peru, and eventually settled in as an Outward Bound instructor in Costa Rica, where he led Outdoor Leadership Semester courses, training future guides and other outdoor professionals. He later became Field Director at a Wilderness Therapy program in Costa Rica, where he trained and managed a team of 15 field guides. He has guided hiking, whitewater rafting, waterfall rappelling, SCUBA diving, surfing, and other activities throughout Central America, as well as being an assistant instructor for Wilderness First Responder, Whitewater Rescue Technician, Technical Rope Rescue, and Waterfront Lifeguard courses. He now brings his passion for teaching and being outdoors to every course at 1776 Survival.
